Plastic ingestionMarine organisms ingest plastic debris that they mistake for prey items. Researchers in Monterey Bay found that up to 97% of sampled Pacific Northern Fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis rogersii) have ingested plastic debris (Donnelly-Greenan, Harvey, Nevins, Hester & Walker, 2014).

Each year between 4.8 and 12.7 million tons of plastic enters the ocean (Jambeck et al., 2015). Marine organisms can ingest or become entangled in plastic debris which can lead to starvation or death. |
Plastic entanglementEntanglement in plastic debris can lead to starvation, suffocation, infection and death. Researchers estimate that each year up to 8% of the California sea lion population will become entangled in plastic debris (Harcourt, Aurioles & Sanchez, 1994).
